INDEPENDENCE OF THE UNITED STATES

The English colonial policy


The thirteen English colonies in North America had a lot of autonomy from their metropolis, unlike the Spanish and Portuguese colonies. He began to change in the second half of the eighteenth century.

Another factor that contributed to the change of the English colonial policy was the unfolding of the Seven Years War (1756-1763) in the Americas. AInglaterra had to bear the high costs of war.





The Crown enacts new laws




To recover the financial losses caused by the Seven Years War and increase control over its colonies, the English Crown created several taxes that generated great dissatisfaction among the colonists.

In 1764 it was enacted the Law of sugar, also known as Revenue Act. In 1733, the English Crown had tried, with the Molasses Act.
In the year 1765, it was issued the Law Seal.
In 1767, the Townshend Act.
Tensions between the colonists and the British government increased with the Tea Act, May 1773.

Colonial reactions against the Tea Act were intense. The best known manifestation, the Boston Tea Party took place on the night of December 16, 1773.
In response, the British government took drastic measures, which became known as the Intolerable Acts.
Reactions against the metropolitan government were located. The autonomy of the thirteen colonies and the economic and social differences between them generated different attitudes towards the idea of independence.
